Buddhist Tourism

2500 years ago an Indian prince Siddhartha renounced all his luxuries, went on the search for truth of life and founded a religion. He meditated and attained spiritual enlightenment and came to be known as the Buddha. This religion spread all over the world and propagated love and non violence. Buddhism was embraced not only by peasants but also by emperors; most notable was Emperor Ashoka of India. Every year thousands of faithful go for pilgrimages. Buddhist tourism is one of the popular pilgrimages in the world.

You can book one of the Buddhist tourism pilgrimage and walk in the foot steps of Lord Buddha. Buddha attained divine enlightenment under a pipal tree in Bodhgaya in India. The main pilgrimage site in Buddhism is Bodhgaya but there are three more important pilgrimage sites namely Lumbini in Nepal, Sarnath and Kushinagar in India. Apart from India Buddhist tourism has become extremely popular in a number of other countries. The countries of Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal, Tibet, Japan and Mongolia have important Buddhist pilgrimage sites and temples.

You should visit Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Kandy and Dambulla in Sri Lanka. Other important places are Bangkok and Ayutthaya in Thailand. Bangkok has a number of important wats like Wat Pho, Wat Phra Kaew and Arun. In Nepal the important Buddhist sites are Kapilavastu, Lumbini and Kathmandu. In Japan you can visit Kyoto and Nara; while in Mongolia visit Ulaanbaatar which features Gandan monastery, Choijin Lama Monastery and Bogd Khan Palace Museum. In Tibet visit the Buddhist sites in Lhasa, Shanna, Ngari and Shigatse.
